SUMMARY:Monthly Speakers Meeting- Kristen Gilliland\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:In this new era of commercial marijuana\, families need support and hope. Please join us on the 2nd Wednesday of every month for messages of healing from the impacts of marijuana and the expanding drug crisis.  There will be a Q&A at the end of each meeting. This meeting may be recorded at the presenter’s discretion. \nThis month\, we feature Dr. Kristine M. Gilliland. \nKristen earned her Ph.D. at the University of Colorado\, Boulder in Organic Chemistry. She later served as an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Cal Poly State University\, San Luis Obispo where she taught Organic Chemistry\, Neurochemistry\, and the Chemistry of Drugs and Poisons. After Kristen’s 17-year-old son\, Anders\, developed schizophrenia – which was most likely associated with high-potency (THC) cannabis use in his early teens – Kristen joined the Warren Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery at Vanderbilt University (2018). At Vanderbilt\, she researched new antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia. During that same year\, Kristen delivered a TEDx presentation titled Rewiring Revolution: Neuroplasticity’s Impact on Wellbeing. Tragically\, Kristen lost her son to an accidental overdose in 2019 after his mental health severely declined\, and he became addicted to opioids and stimulants. \nTwo years after her devastating loss\, Kristen changed the trajectory of her life to utilize her scientific teaching and research skills to educate adolescent-aged children and their caregivers on mental health challenges and how it can lead to substance use and selfharm. As the Director of Outreach and Advocacy Programs and Assistant Professor of Research at the Warren Center\, Kristen presented to youth\, caregivers\, legislators\, and law enforcement about the impact repeated stress\, social media\, screen time\, and substances have on the developing adolescent brain. In addition\, she developed a multi award-winning educational documentary aimed at youth titled “Speaking Through Me” that was released August 2023. \nKristen has appeared on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and NewsNation: Elizabeth Vargas Reports regarding increased psychosis risk with high-potency cannabis use during adolescence. In 2025\, the overwhelming desire to reach more youth called Kristen to launch the non-profit “22 Forever” in memory of her son\, Anders. As the President and Executive Director of 22 Forever while continuing as Assistant Professor of Research at Vanderbilt Medical School\, Kristen delivers adolescent brain health presentations both nationally and internationally. In addition\, 22 Forever’s mission includes empowering young minds through a middle school curriculum that educates on optimizing brain health and well-being during this opportune time of adolescent neuroplasticity. \nRegister for this meeting at this link. Once registered\, you will receive a Zoom link to join the meeting\, which you can save to your calendar. SUMMARY:Monthly Speakers Meeting- Tim Scott-recovery cannabis psychosis
DESCRIPTION:In this new era of industrialized THC\, families need support and hope. Please join us on the 2nd Wednesday of every month for messages of healing from the impacts of marijuana and the expanding drug crisis.  There will be a Q&A at the end of each meeting. This meeting may be recorded at the presenter’s discretion. \nThis month Tim Scott will sharehis story. He states: \n“In late May of 2020 I had a psychotic break from vaping marijuana and was hospitalized after my suicide attempt. After my hospitalization I had no more delusions and slowly my brain got back to normal. I had 3 more mental hospital visits (September 2020 for depression: the rebound from the mania I had earlier that year. Jan of 2022 for mania with suicidal idealations: i started smoking pot again because my therapist had me convinced their must have been something in the vape cartridge that made me go psychotic. Apparently he didnt realize marijuana could cause psychosis. In that hospitalization was when I learned pot was a trigger for my mania(i’m bipolar). I stopped marijuana altogether after that hospitalization. In November of 2023 I was hospitalized for anxiety. I actually thought I was going psychotic again\, and was scared that my brain might go back to the final delusion I had when I tried to commit suicide back in June of 2020. \nI havent touched pot since the hospitalization in Jan of 2022 and i’m stable. I’ve been stable (not manic) since November of 2024 when my mania suddenly stopped. \nMy book\, A Story That Must Be Told: A Memoir of Marijuana-Induced Psychosis\, covers my psychotic break. I just started a follow-up book that goes more into my mental health journey as a whole and the knowledge I’ve learned along the way. \nRegister for this meeting at this link. SUMMARY:Monthly Speakers Meeting- Katie
DESCRIPTION:In this new era of commerical THC\, families need support and hope. Please join us on the 2nd Wednesday of every month for messages of healing from the impacts of marijuana and the expanding drug crisis.  There will be a Q&A at the end of each meeting. This meeting may be recorded at the presenter’s discretion. \nThis month Katie will share her story. She states: \n“Everything was alright until the day something snapped. One moment\, I was feeling ecstatic and inspired\, even poetic; the next\, a horrifying fear began to siphon into my being. This fear arrested me\, directed me\, and quickly took me captive. I started living in a nightmarish\, dystopian narrative tailored precisely to me. This was Cannabis-Induced Psychosis. \nAfter over 2 years clean of marijuana\, I am finally seeing the results of abstinence\, recovery\, and healing. The nightmare is now safely a memory\, but it was an experience I would not wish on any soul. Please allow me to continue my healing journey by sharing my experience. I have gone from smoking marijuana alcoholically\, “any time my eyes were open\,” to sobriety and service. Awareness is key\, and if sharing my story is at all helpful in alleviating suffering\, I am grateful to be part of it.” \nRegister for this meeting at this link. SUMMARY:Every Brain Matters Monthly Speakers Meeting - Bryn Spejcher
\nThis month we feature Bryn Spejcher. \nOne evening in Thousand Oaks\, California\, life took a devastating turn for Bryn shortly after she began her career as a Doctor of Audiology at UCLA. Bryn experimented with cannabis legally\, unaware of the potential risks or dangers. Unbeknownst to her\, she was pressured into taking a ‘large dose’ of highly potent THC\, which triggered a rapid descent into severe psychosis. In her altered state\, her perception of reality became dangerously distorted\, and intense hallucinations drove her actions unconsciously. \nIn a psychotic state\, Bryn experienced a loss of touch with reality and overwhelming fear\, which led to harm being inflicted upon them both. When the police arrived\, Bryn was unable to comprehend or follow their commands\, as she was responding only to the voices in her head and experiencing hallucinations. \nThe court later ruled the incident as involuntary manslaughter\, acknowledging that cannabis-induced psychosis (CIP) was the only cause of this heartbreaking event. \nRegister for this meeting at this link. SUMMARY:The Parent Action Network - Crissy Groenewegen
\nThis month we feature the Parent Action Network. \nThe Parent Action Network (PAN) is a grassroots initiative of Smart Approaches to Marijuana that seeks to raise the voices of families who have been negatively impacted by the legalization and commercialization of marijuana\, especially today’s high-potency products. Through their trainings PAN equips families with the tools and resources they need to tell their stories and enact change. PAN educates parents and families on current issues\, arming them with science-based facts\, and empowering them so they have the confidence and tools to encourage decision-makers to make informed drug policy decisions that protect our public health and safety. In this presentation\, you will learn the ways in which you can get involved with PAN and advocate on Capitol Hill and in your own states and communities. \nCrissy Groenewegen serves as the Director of the Parent Action Network. She is the former Director of the only non-profit agency in Dutchess County\, NY\, dedicated to preventing youth initiation into substance use and misuse. She is a skilled prevention specialist\, experienced at building the capacity of small grass roots community groups and movements. She is passionate about making a difference in our communities and working to make our neighborhoods safe for youth and families. The decision to take on this role comes from a place of great respect for the advocacy work that SAM does. She shares SAM’s mission and vision of creating a network of parents and families who will be able to tell their stories\, and in turn educate lawmakers\, and advocate for safe policies surrounding the issue of legalized marijuana and the dangers of today’s high potency THC products. Crissy is the mother of three adult children and the proud grandma to her only grandchild\, Ethan! SUMMARY:Every Brain Matters Speakers Meeting - Holiday Family Tips
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an important discussion on how families are managing cannabis-related challenges during the holidays. Our panelists aim to inspire hope in families facing the genuine harms associated with cannabis. \nBart and Hazel Bright have transformed the pain of losing their son into a mission to help others. Hazel serves as the Director of a local NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) organization\, while Bart is a founding member and the president of the board of Mar-Anon. They have been a source of support for families negatively affected by marijuana for many years\, inspiring them to continue working on solid recovery programs. \nMary Maas is currently facing the challenges of having a loved one who is homeless and struggling with mental and physical health issues due to cannabis use. Despite this\, her unwavering faith allows her to care for herself while running support groups through Mar-Anon. She also leads a mothers’ fellowship\, sharing her experiences to provide strength and hope to other families. \nBryn Spejcher was unaware that marijuana could trigger deep psychosis and lead to violent behavior\, which ultimately claimed the life of her friend and nearly cost her own life as well. Now\, she works alongside professionals\, has strong support from her family\, and relies on her faith to continue her healing process after this traumatic experience. \nIn this new era of industrialized THC\, families need support and hope. Please join us on the second Wednesday of every month for messages of healing from the impacts of marijuana and the expanding drug crisis.  There will be a Q&A at the end of each meeting. SUMMARY:Every Brain Matters Speakers Meeting- Kobi Russell - recovery cannabis psychosis
DESCRIPTION:In this new era of industrialized THC\, families need support and hope. Please join us on the second Wednesday of every month for messages of healing from the impacts of marijuana and the expanding drug crisis.  There will be a Q&A at the end of each meeting. This meeting may be recorded at the presenter’s discretion. \nKobi Russell is a recent graduate of Brandeis University who currently works in the fields of conflict resolution and accessibility. In late 2018\, due to a “perfect storm” of triggers\, including stress\, lack of sleep\, medication\, and\, most importantly\, daily high-potency cannabis usage\, Kobi had a severe and prolonged episode of cannabis-induced psychosis\, CIP. During his recovery\, a relative told him\, “Kobi\, you’ve gone to a place [mentally] that most people will never go.” \nAs he began speaking publicly about his experience with psychosis\, sobriety\, and recovery (both online and with his community)\, Kobi quickly reached the painful realization that he was far from alone. Kobi hopes that this talk and\, ideally\, future collaborations with Every Brain Matters will show that young people who experience CIP are not alone\, that there are others who understand their experience on a deeply personal level\, and that recovery is a journey––and it is absolutely possible! \nKobi is 25 years old and lives with his family in Somerville\, MA. He enjoys getting active in nice weather and hiding inside when it snows! \nRegister for this meeting at this link. SUMMARY:Every Brain Matters Monthly Speakers Meeting - We Have Our Son Back From Cannabis Psychosis
DESCRIPTION:In this new era of industrialized cannabis\, families need support and hope. \nThis month\, we learned from Mom and Dad O. \nWe are 60-something parents who came of age during the 1970s when cannabis use was no big deal. When our son began to use cannabis in his late teens during his early college years\, we weren’t particularly concerned. But then we witnessed our kind-hearted\, bright\, outgoing\, athletic son begin to develop odd behaviors that ultimately escalated into full-blown psychosis. This was around 2017\, and there was very little information or support available for families struggling with a loved one suffering from Cannabis-Induced Psychosis (CIP). Frankly\, we weren’t really sure if his psychotic behavior was entirely from cannabis\, another drug use\, or some organic disorder. \nOver the years\, our son has been involuntarily hospitalized twice and admitted to multiple rehab facilities. Every facility claimed to have a means to treat CIP but really\, they were at a loss as to what to do with him\, especially the earlier ones. We witnessed our son spiral further and further into his delusional mindset. We mourned for him as we watched him turn into someone we didn’t recognize. \nDuring this time\, we became involved with a 12-step support group\, Families Anonymous (FA). Our involvement with FA provided us with the tools and mindset to cope with this unpredictable emotional roller coaster. It also connected us with wonderful resources and even more wonderful people\, many of whom are now dear friends. We still attend our meetings. \nIt has been two years since our son returned home from his last inpatient treatment program. At that time\, he was the most clear-headed we had seen in years. His mental clarity has continued\, and he is once again thoroughly engaged in society\, our family\, and his future.  He is on no medication. His clarity is from simply NOT USING CANNABIS. We have our son back. \nThis meeting will be recorded but not available to the public. The family will share this recording at their discretion for educational purposes and to maintain anonymity. \nRegister for this meeting at this link. Once registered\, you will be sent a Zoom link to join the meeting that you can save to your calendar. You will not be required to register again if you have already registered for a previous Speakers Meeting.  There will be a Q&A at the end of each meeting.  If you have any questions\, please email us at info@everybrainmatters.org. \nThis meeting is free\, but donations are welcome to increase our effort to support and advocate for families impacted by industrialized marijuana.  \nLink To Register Brain \nMeeting ID: 872 9417 0134\nPasscode: ebmsupport \nPlease join us on the second Wednesday of every month for messages of healing from the impacts of cannabis and the expanding drug crisis.

SUMMARY:Every Brain Matters Monthly Speakers Meeting
DESCRIPTION:In this new era of industrialized THC\, families need support and hope. Please join us on the first Friday of every month for messages of healing from the impacts of marijuana and the expanding drug crisis.  There will be a Q&A at the end of each meeting. This meeting may be recorded at the presenter’s discretion. \nThis month\, we hear from Michael D’Onfro. \nHi\, I’m Michael. I started using marijuana because I thought it was a safe alternative to alcohol. Unfortunately\, marijuana became my crutch\, and over time\, I began to enter into a psychosis. I posted his entire life unfiltered on social media while having visual and audible hallucinations. I thought I was in the Illuminati and that I was running for president of the US. My life spiraled out of control. I’ve been to five detox centers and a psyche ward\, and spent three months in an Adult Teen challenge program. Today\, I am one year clean from marijuana and 90 days clean from alcohol. Medication is helping to a point\, but I am struggling with depression and getting a job. I hope that with medication and God’s help\, I can once again be a contributing member of society. \nRegister for this meeting at this link. Once registered\, you will be sent a Zoom link to join the meeting that you can save to your calendar.
