“For all the irresponsible politicians trying to get votes by legalizing marijuana, maybe it’s time to understand the NEGATIVE IMPACTS from smoking this crap! People rushing to ER’s and increased info on school shooters connected to obsessive pot smoking.”
~ Derek Maltz, Acting Administrator, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration
Meet your new head of the DEA.
In a significant move, President Donald Trump appointed Derek S. Maltz as Acting Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration. This appointment could drastically alter the political landscape that has enabled the drug crisis to escalate in the United States.
Who Is Derek Maltz?
“At a time when so many of our people have been killed by fentanyl and other drugs, he’s exactly what we need.”
~ Chip Roy, U.S. House of Representatives, Texas, 21st Congressional District
Derek Maltz is a former DEA Special Agent with a career spanning 28 years before his retirement in 2018. He also served as Chief of the New York Drug Enforcement Task Force, the oldest and largest drug task force in the country.
Maltz has dedicated his life to combating illegal drugs, inspired from a young age. At just seven years old, he accompanied his father, a New York City drug trafficking task force agent, on his first undercover surveillance assignment.
Major Career Accomplishments:
- Developed and implemented cooperative policies between the Department of Justice and Homeland Security, enhancing efforts to combat crime and drug trafficking.
- Established the Counter Narco-Terrorism Operations Center, a multi-agency initiative targeting drug-related terrorism.
- Served as Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s Special Operations Division, the nerve center for America’s international drug and crime-fighting campaigns.
With his stellar reputation, extensive experience working with other agencies, and trusted relationships with domestic and international law enforcement leaders and intelligence agents, Maltz is expected to pursue powerful drug cartels.
**In His Own Words:**
“DEA is positioned to lead the nation’s drug enforcement and intelligence efforts, working closely within the federal, state, and local partners, to seize record amounts of illicit drugs; bring the world’s most ruthless narco-terrorists to justice; and save American lives by creating a vast network of community partners to help spread critical awareness,” he says.
What Does Maltz Say About Marijuana?
“It’s crystal clear to me that the Justice Department hijacked the rescheduling process, placing politics above public safety.”
~ Derek Maltz
Derek Maltz is not a supporter of marijuana, citing the negative effects it has on individual users and society as a whole, such as increased emergency room visits and its connection to mass shootings.
Pro-cannabis advocates often quote Maltz regarding cannabis rescheduling when he stated, “If there’s scientific evidence to support this decision, then so be it.” They interpret this as his implied acceptance, if not outright approval.
However, they frequently omit the rest of his statement, where he emphasized, “But you’ve got to let the scientists evaluate it.”
If the decision to reschedule marijuana indeed hinges on scientific evidence rather than political influence and paid propaganda, the cannabis lobby should reconsider their confidence.
To be rescheduled, the evidence must show that marijuana has legitimate medical value, and that is very debatable at best and in all probability, completely disproven. The mountain of data undermining the notion that pot is a medicine continues to grow.
To warrant rescheduling, compelling evidence must demonstrate that marijuana has legitimate medical value. However, this claim remains highly debatable and is likely unproven. A growing body of data continues to challenge the notion that marijuana is a valid form of medicine.
In summary, it is neither safe nor particularly effective.
What Happens Next?
The rescheduling of hearings has been put on hold indefinitely due to complaints from the cannabis industry. There is currently no timeline for when or if Maltz will revisit the issue or address these complaints. As a result, many in the industry believe that the prospect of rescheduling is effectively dead for the foreseeable future. At the very least, this situation puts a “PAUSE” on the reckless and hasty push toward full legalization.

That commenter sounds the way I would have come across 30 years ago in my youth when I was in the throws of this stupefying crap. I’m not really joking when I say there is a huge connection between “The Left” and being infantilized by chronic cannabis use. The hostility to law enforcement, expecting to be coddled by society, a hatred toward any sort of “parental” voice suggesting self responsibility, heck doesn’t “Universal Basic Income” reek like it was cooked up in a cloud of pot smoke? This stuff has had enormous damage on the psychology of large segments of society. Many are not making that conservative turn at 30 anymore and remaining infantilized well into middle age. The rage from the left, marijuana derangement? Pot is the straw that stirs the leftist drink.
It is on the US Attorney for each federal district to set their own enforcement priorities. Medical cannabis has budgetary protectuion granted to them by Congress. This is NOT true of “Adult Use.” Finally, as regards whether the budgetary protection Congress has provided to the states’ medicinal cannabis programs applies to adult use, the most recent federal case to look at this was, (US v Bilodeau, U.S. App. LEXIS 2283,*14-19 (1st CIR.2022).
The US Attorney filed a Petition for a Writ of Certiorari and SCOTUS denied it, so the following is the current law of the land.
“Congress surely did not intend for the rider to provide a safe harbor to all caregivers with facially valid documents without regard for blatantly illegitimate activity in which those caregivers may be engaged and which the state has itself identified as falling outside its medical marijuana regime. “Bilodeau, ibid
It is a blatantly obvious, unavoidably necessary inference that “Adult Use” (non-medicinal) has been so identified as falling outside any states’ medical marijuana regime. So anyone seriously opposed to adult-use cannabis could be bringing pressure to bear on their federal district’s US Attorney to prosecute adult use. Point out that there’s many, many dollars’ worth of low anging fruit, in the form of adult use assets and accounts subject to in rem forfeiture.
