Joe Parker was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. After more moves than he can count he settled in Katy, TX with his mother and little sister. At age 14 after beginning his own recovery he realized his dream was to become a counselor in order to help other young people achieve their goals of a happy, healthy life free from debilitating addictions and self-destructive behaviors. Joe believes that one of the biggest keys to successful long-term recovery lies in a relationship with a higher power expressed through connection with others. He still follows the same basic principles today with 20+ years of recovery as he did with 30 days sober; God, Sponsor, Steps, Meetings, Service.
After Awakening from Cornerstone Recovery in 2000 at the age of 17 and graduating high school Joe began attending classes at Texas Tech. At the time of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, he felt compelled to serve our country by enlisting in the Marine Corps. Following 8 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, including tours in the Republic of Georgia and active duty in Iraq in 2004-2005 as a machine gunner; Joe graduated from Texas Tech University in May 2008 with a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies, and a minor in Substance Abuse Studies. During this time he spent several years (2005-2008) working in residential treatment centers across Texas before being honorably discharged from the Marines in November 2010. The following year he rejoined Cornerstone Recovery.
Joe currently works as the primary counselor for Cornerstone of Houston Team Counseling program in the greater Houston & Fortbend areas. Joeā€™s work is more than a job, he says itā€™s a calling and his passion. He has witnessed the success of Cornerstoneā€™s Positive Peer Group method first hand, and says its value cannot be overstated. Positive peer support is what youth live and breathe by, and the daily example set by peers speaks the loudest; and with the parent group as the backbone of the program, he feels his role is to lead by example and illuminate the path.
Joe is an ā€œin the trenchesā€ type of counselor who deals with all aspects of substance abuse choosing to focus on a ā€œwhole personā€ method of treatment. Heā€™s well-versed in what is needed in a crisis and has helped numerous families in facilitating interventions. He leads a weekly interactive group therapy session for parents where he facilitates open, honest, direct communication on all parenting topics especially as they relate to teens and self-destructive behaviors. He also provides individual counseling for both teens and parents, as well as family counseling in order to deal with all of the issues that may either be leading to or stemming from a substance abuse issue. He puts his all into getting at the heart of the matter so as to begin the healing in the mind, body, and spirit.

Every Brain Matters Monthly Speakers Meeting -Josie M.

Iā€™m Josie M., Iā€™m 22 and Iā€™ve been clean from marijuana and other substances for 3 years. Marijuana was my drug of choice and led me down a path of self-destruction behaviors. It heavily affected my mental health, causing acutely heightened anxiety and paranoia. Through working a 12-step program I have found healing, love, and the truth about how mind-changing chemicals really affect me. Join me while I share my story of recovery from marijuana with the Every Brain Matters community on June 3rd.

Every Brain Matters Monthly Speakers Meeting -Ethan Andrew

My name is Ethan Andrew. I suffered from cannabis-induced psychosis about 5 years ago. Despite a full recovery, I have never truly been the same since. Although I am succeeding in life on the surface, marijuana has affected me mentally to the point where I live in constant fear if Iā€™m in the clear or not. That is, will I ever experience psychosis again? Will I develop a long-term psychotic illness? Those are thoughts I have to live with and accept. Donā€™t get me wrong, I am blessed to be here and I live a happy, fulfilling life. I overcame addiction to such a misunderstood drug. Whatever demons I deal with now would be infinitely worse if I didnā€™t cease my cannabis use. I just wish I knew then what I know now.

Every Brain Matters Monthly Speakers Meeting -Rowan-P.

I’m Rowan painter, 18 years old, from Houston Texas. I became addicted to vaping marijuana at a young age which led me to feel depressed and I was totally shut down. Then, I progressed to use more drugs,Ā  like injecting meth. I have been in and out of recovery for 3 years with some challenging situations, but I’m so grateful to say, I now have achieved 8 months of sobriety. My life has completely changed and the obsession to get high is no longer haunting me. Ā And on a lighter note, a fun fact about me isĀ  I love the reality TV show Survivor and have studied the game since its conception.Ā  My dream is to one day be picked to participate in the Survivor challenge. Please join me to hear more about my recovery story on Nov. 4, 2022.

Wednesday Mar-Anon meeting with focus on adult qualifiers (independent of EBM)

Mar-anon

This meeting every Wednesday will focus on adult qualifiers (spouses, boyfriends, girlfriends, significant others, brothers/sisters, parents etc.) although all are welcome.

Mar-Anon is a fellowship of those affected by another personā€™s marijuana use.Ā  Its foundation is the Twelve Steps, adapted fromĀ Marijuana Anonymous, which can be a powerful, life-changing tool.Ā  We come together to work the steps and offer hope, comfort, and support for other members.Ā  We are not a religious group, instead, we use the steps as a path of self-discovery and personal change. The only requirement for membership is that a person be affected by anotherā€™s marijuana addiction.

Mar-Anon is independent of the Every Brain Matters Organization. EBM encourages Mar-Anon meetings to promote healing.

This is an online zoom meeting.

Every Brain Matters Monthly Speakers Meeting- Lauren B.

My name is Lauren. Marijuana has damaged my life in many ways. I have substance use disorder. I started using marijuana at the age of 14 and by 17 my drug of choice was heroin. I have bipolar and an anxiety disorder and when I used marijuana it would often send me into panic attacks and episodes of mania, and worse, marijuana caused me to experience psychosis. I have been in recovery for the past two years, but I have struggled the most with my dependency to marijuana. Marijuana was not a harm-reduction drug for me, it always led me back to heroin. Many nights I contemplated taking my life and even attempted to a couple of times.Ā  Overcoming my addiction has been by far the hardest thing Iā€™ve had to do. I have been in two psychiatric wards and seven rehabilitation centers. Iā€™ve had hours of therapy and I work an AA program where I have been able to find peace and the ability to live sober. I am currently in school getting my LCDC (Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor), so I can help other addicts find the same serenity I have. Please join me on December 2nd to hear my experience, strengths, and hope.

Event Series Every Brain Matters Monthly Speakers Meeting

Every Brain Matters Monthly Speakers Meeting -Dominic M.

Hello, my name is Dominic M., and I am currently 18 years old. My sobriety date is 1-28ā€“2022. I struggled a lot most of my life. I did things to get attention,Ā  and I didn’t have any real connections, especially with my dad. There was a lot of violence in both of my homes, and it seemed like my parent’s divorce was the portal to me entering hell. For me, drugs were always an option, and when I first started getting high, I didn’t even have a good time.Ā  I was made fun of and ridiculed because of my behavior. My using honestly really skyrocketed when I convinced my mom and psychiatrist that Delta-8 THC was CBD. This began the huge rift in my relationship with them, and I began using Delta-8 almost daily. I convinced my parents that Delta-8 was medicine, but I was really using it to get high.

After a few years of using, and even using while I was in a recovery program. I decided to actually honestly work on my recovery during my last relapse when I was inhaling dangerous chemicals from aerosol cans and seriously considered using meth.Ā  I had decided that enough was enough. I wanted to get sober for real. Having the willingness to work on my recovery and then putting that willingness into action (work), I am proud to say I have been sober for almost a year. Please join me on Jan. 6 at 6 pm central time to hear about my experience, strength, and hope.

Event Series Every Brain Matters Monthly Speakers Meeting

Every Brain Matters Monthly Speakers Meeting – Ethan D.

My name is Ethan and I started struggling emotionally at a young age. I grew up in a dysfunctional family, where drugs and alcohol were used to cope with life’s challenges. My parents drank themselves away from me and other relationships.Ā  I was the youngest in the family and I grew up helping my older sisters sneak out at night. My parents divorced when I was 14 years old and I felt completely alone because I was the last child left in the house.Ā  As my family continued to struggle, I found that drugs helped me get through each day. At first, it started out fun but soon the only reason I woke up was to use alcohol and marijuana.Ā  Marijuana became my obsession.Ā  Itā€™s all I thought about each day, and all day long. Using marijuana at such a young age had a major impact on my mental health, and I developed a deep anger toward the world. Today I am 20 years old and I am proud to say have achievedĀ  3 and a half years of sobriety. I also help teens and young adults who have struggled like me find their pathway to sobriety. Join me on Feb 3rd to hear about my experience, strength, and hope.
